Listen To This Hair-Raising Story - What Is The Purpose Of Human Hair

"Listen To This Hair-Raising Story... What Is The Purpose
Of Human Hair?"

- by Rachel Stepsen

The human hair has no bodily function to perform. Hair does
not help you to breathe, digest your food, pump blood,
fight germs in the body or help you to think and make
decisions. Yet, hair loss is treated as a great tragedy
that should never have happened. A head full of beautiful
hair is termed the 'crowning glory'.

Healthy hair is a sign of overall good health. Indeed,
illness in any other part of the body is sometimes also
reflected in the hair. The hair loses its luster and the
face its glow. Good hair shaped in a hairstyle that
complements the face can make anyone look attractive! This
is why hair loss is treated with so much dread and despair.

The hair is an important component of how you look and how
presentable you are to the world. It is a part of your
self-image. It helps you to feel good about yourselves.
Hair loss can plunge the victim into depression. Baldness
or hair loss is greeted with comments like "He is growing
old", "He is wiser" or "He is dull". Hair loss is a
difficult situation for men, but more so for women.

Popular media keeps projecting images of women with slim
bodies, perfectly aligned teeth and beautiful hair. It was
hard enough to lose weight but with hair loss, … the
psychological after-effects can be quite damaging.

Men and women have been preoccupied with hair loss problems
since the beginning of civilization. (Before civilization,
it was a case of excess hair since we share a common
ancestry with apes!)

In ancient Egypt, concoctions made of fats from ibex, lion,
crocodiles and geese were used for baldness. Hippocrates,
the father of medicine, prescribed a mixture of cumin,
pigeon droppings, horseradish and beetroots or nettles to
help prevent hair loss.

Since then, countless inventions and solutions have been
suggested for hair loss problems. Even today, drug
companies come out with medicines for hair loss and spend
millions of dollars on research. The solutions range from
surgery to drugs. Most traditional medicines such as
Ayurveda and Homeopathy have numerous treatments for hair
loss.

Some of these solutions are effective and others are not so
effective. Faced with so many treatments, it is important
to first correctly diagnose why hair loss is occurring
before deciding on a course of treatment.

If it is any comfort - some great men were mostly bald -
the names of Winston Churchill and Mahatma Gandhi come to
mind. However, for the rest of us ordinary people, hair
loss is a problem that has to be solved!
