Female Hair Loss - Causes and Cures

Female hair loss can be just as devastating as it is for men, and actually has more lifestyle related causes. Womens hair is damaged constantly by the use of harsh dyes, chemicals for permanents, and the heat of blow dryers and curling irons.

In fact, hair loss in a woman takes place on a more regular basis, and starting at an earlier age, than with most men. That's because many of the causes of female hair loss are related to the way their hair is worn or treated. Corn rows for example, which are popular even with young girls, cause a condition known as "traction alopecia", where continuous stress on the shafts can cause breakage and scarring over of the scalp.

Womens hair is also subject to pattern baldness, a condition more prevalent in men. But they also have the additional hormonal influences associated with pregnancy, where a woman will experience a surge in hair loss, three to six months after the birth of a child. In addition, female hair loss increases during menopause.

When a woman begins to notice an excessive loss of hair, she needs to consult a doctor, to assess the causes. Hair loss in a woman, whether it is related to chemical treatments, hormones, or a lifestyle that includes too much stress, in most cases is reversible or treatable.

But for female hair loss that requires more than patience, and a change of diet, treatment should only be accepted on the advice of an experienced physician.
